Weekly Homily Assignment

Each week, you will be required to read over the mass readings for the upcoming weekend liturgy with your family (we will also be reading them in class).

I encourage this weekly assignment to be a family creation.  The format of the homily will rotate from week to week.  The homily may be one of the following:

        1) You Pick: choose one of the 4 readings and summarize it and explain what it means. (at least 5 sentences)

       2) Connect Two:  find a common thread running between at least two readings.can, you will come up with a homily of at least 5 to 6 well formed sentences.  Each week will have a little different writing style approach. (at least 5 sentences)

      3) Drawing/Cartoon:  pick one of the readings and turn it into a drawing or cartoon

      4) Perspective Writing:  describe a reading through the eyes of one of the characters (or a made up character).  Describe smells, sights, sounds, reactions….(at least 5 sentences)

Sample Homily –

Today’s second reading from the book of Hebrews talks about our final destination, the everlasting feast in HEAVEN.  The author of the Hebrews refers to our final destination as the “heavenly Jerusalem” where there are countless angels gathered around the feast as well as the “assembly,” the faithful Christians saved by God’s grace.  Presiding over this feast is none other than the Blessed Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  No eye has seen, nor ear has heard of the glories that await us in heaven.  Of course we don’t have to wait till we die to experience the “heavenly Jerusalem.”  Every Sunday Jesus calls us to come to the feast, the Catholic Mass, and join with the angels and saints to gather around the altar of the Lord be nourished by the word of God proclaimed and receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.  We can also taste the glory of heaven on earth thourgh our daily experiences like hanging out with family and friends, enjoying a good meal, or viewing the beauty of creation.  These are just a foretaste to what God has instore for us for all eternity!!
