This Week In Music:
CONGRATULATIONS to all who participated in the Christmas and Grandparents Day music performances!! Everyone did a fantastic job and our hard work really showed! Now we are back to recorders to really focus on them and become proficient for our Spring concert performance, which will be on Thursday, May 10th, 2012 at 7pm. In addition, we will be doing “Recorder Karate” in which each student works independently to earn “karate” belts by practicing and passing off the designated songs. Any student who gets all the way to black belt will receive a certificate at the end and have the option of playing the black belt song at the Spring Concert. You can practice your recorder karate songs along with the links above. Make sure to pick up a copy of the music from Mrs. Lynch! Keep practicing, and check the calendar link at the top for details about our next performance!
Class Description and Important Information:
This year’s 4th grade will be learning about and creating music with a variety of classroom instruments including recorders, boomwhackers, rhythm band, and tone chimes. In addition, they will learn about music history and theory, reading and writing music, and will even have the opportunity to create their own compositions. Towards the end of the year following the Spring Concert, they will be given an introduction to Band and begin trying and playing the school band instruments to prepare for next year when they will have Band during their music class. Music is co-curricular, so expect to be learning across the board as we get into a wide variety of repertoire.
Materials: These must be brought to every class.
1. Recorder – can be any color as long as it includes a plastic carrying bag and cleaning rod (these are inexpensive and can be purchased at a music store – see links on the right – or at Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc. Please do not buy the “dollar” recorders at a dollar store).
2. A small square/rectangle of cotton cloth to use with the cleaning rod for cleaning their recorders. I would suggest approximately 3” to 5”. Too large a cloth will not fit through the recorder.
3. A “music only” 2-pocket folder to keep sheet music, music books, handouts, etc.
4. A pencil with an eraser.
Classroom rules:
1. Be polite and respectful…

2. Follow directions
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
4. Always try to do your best
5. Have Fun!!!
